Logitech V400 Laser Wireless Notebook Mouse

The Logitech V400 Laser Cordless Mouse is a high-performance, rugged notebook PC mouse designed to work virtually anywhere – whether it’s at home, in the conference room, or on a weekend expedition.

The rapidly expanding segment of notebook PC owners use their computers in a wide variety of usual and unusual environments – and they need a mouse that tracks on many kinds of surfaces. The V400 wireless notebook mouse expertly performs on a wide range of surfaces with an innovative dual laser tracking engine. Also, Logitech’s 2.4 GHz digital cordless technology provides a robust wireless connection that can withstand crowded wireless airspace and still deliver a range of up to 30 feet. The plug-and-play USB micro-receiver tucks away neatly inside the mouse’s storage slot when not in use, so that it doesn’t get lost and is easy to transport. And to help protect the mouse from travel trauma – the sporty new mouse design features a shock-resistant exoskeleton with a reinforced frame and dual-injected rubber rails.

“Combining the precision of our dual laser tracking engine and advanced wireless technology with a unique design, the V400 is the perfect mobile mouse for those who value reliable performance in any environment,” said Ashish Arora, Logitech vice president of product marketing for retail pointing devices. “As we developed this mouse, we researched the designs and materials used for rugged devices like such as mobile phones, GPS handhelds – even sport utility vehicles. Structurally, this is the most durable mouse we’ve ever made, but it’s also one of the most technologically sophisticated.”

Dual Laser Tracking
The Logitech V400 Laser Cordless Mouse uses a new dual laser tracking technology that is tuned to provide maximum surface coverage. Dual laser technology does not take pictures of a surface, as do most optical and laser sensors. Instead, it measures changes in the frequency of reflected light as the sensor is moved at different speeds and in different directions. Working together, these two lasers provide extremely accurate tracking performance on virtually any surface – ideal for a notebook mouse. The dual laser engine is packaged in a radically smaller, single-chip form factor – a crucial feature that enables the V400 to be so compact, portable, and durable. As with all Logitech laser products, the laser is nearly invisible and very safe: It meets the Class 1M safety standard.

Logitech 2.4 GHz Digital Cordless
The Logitech V400 Wireless Notebook Mouse and its USB micro-receiver connect instantly when the receiver is plugged into a notebook PC. The 2.4 GHz digital cordless technology provides a stronger connection between the mouse and micro-receiver than found in conventional 27 MHz mice. The robust 2.4 GHz digital cordless technology is important for notebook PC users who may encounter a variety of wireless barriers or interference from Wi-Fi networks and other wireless products. Also, the mouse’s operating range of up to 30 feet is greater than for most cordless mice.

Rugged, Sporty Design
The Logitech V400 Laser Cordless Mouse comes in two different color schemes: silver with grey and orange accents, and grey with black grips. The mouse includes Logitech’s Tilt Wheel Plus Zoom wheel, which allows people to effortlessly scroll left, right, up and down, and zoom in and out of images, Web pages and open documents. Another innovative feature is the fingertip-accessible Universal Forward and Backward buttons located on the corner of the mouse – perfect for paging forward or backward in a range of common applications.

Smart Power Management System
With an integrated battery light indicator, people will know when the Logitech V400 Laser Cordless Mouse is getting low on power. Located just above the built-in receiver slot, the light begins to flash red when there is approximately a week of power left. The mouse requires only a single AA battery, which helps keep the weight down for frequent travelers. Also, the mouse automatically turns off when the receiver is inserted into the storage slot – helping to extend battery life.

I just got a V400 on sale and was wondering how to assign tasks to the toggle area on the left and right part of the wheel. Also, the wireless mouse jumps to left about an inch every once in a while on it’s own and when i click it jumps. Could this be a driver problem or is the mouse defective?

gets a 10 out of 10 from me.

  3. Nice honest review. I like how you talk about the ergonomic aspects and are aware how serious it is.

  4. Adam,

To see if it’s a driver issue, go to logitech’s site and download the mouse utility driver for the V400 computer mouse. The one I use dosent jump at all, and the software made every button on it programmable to my liking. The zoom feature works really good and I have had no problems with this little mouse even for gaming.

The only other thing I could think of is they did make 2 versions of this mouse but the first version was pulled rather quickly for such problems like tracking issues. If the package it came in doesn’t say “Optimized Tuned” on the sticker and test on the front… then you got the first version of the mouse and need to bring it back in exchange for the updated one which the stores should be selling originally. The second version they put out cleared up all the problems people had with the first one. Hope this clears this up for you.

  5. Professor Alan Hedge,

Thank you so much for the compliment and for your input. I browsed around your site and am very impressed with the work and information you have written about as well as the time you put into all of it. It is a honor to get this comment from such a well known professor at Cornell University. Thanks again.
